A rose by another name came from William Shakespeare's play called Romeo and Juliet. It's an old quote because the play written in 1591. It means 'The names of things do not matter, only what things are'. Heres a fun fact it is a weapon affect on Borderlands 2. The full quote is actually 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet'. In scene 2 of the play, the line is said by Juliet in reference to Romeo's house.
